I am a graduate of the Ottawa University’s visual art and
arts administration bachelor. My current goal is to excel as an
administrator in the cultural and artistic domain. I also aspire
to be a great contemporary artist, namely in the domain of comic
books and illustrations.
In
my opinion, the story and the image are two inseparable concepts.
One always is always omnipresent in the other and if indeed an image
is worth a thousand words, clearly these words do well to assemble
and create a story for the viewer. Now, whether this story is abstract,
narrative, seen by all or personal to a viewer or an artist, this
story is truly present and researched. It is due to my fascination
for the link present between the story and art that I show great
interest in sources of inspiration such as myths, art history, pop
culture, literature, cinema, comic books and fairy tales. Most of
the works I create are simply windows through which I seek to explore
the possibilities of my imagination while studying the links that
inherent symbols may have with the history of the culture that surrounds
me.
I
am fond of many mediums such as ink, watercolor, pencil, photography,
digital imaging and sculpture. I love to explore the human form,
facial expressions and the great possibilities of the paper medium,
may it be in its texture, its separation or its layering.
Several
historical artists have inspired me, namely the movements of the
Raphealites, the Surrealists and Art Nouveau. Several contemporary
artists have also greatly influenced my work. Among those artists
I’d like to point out Paula Rego, Shelly Newman Stevens, Virginie
Morillo, Julie Morstad, Amy Ross, Su Blackwell, Ed Pien, Orly Cogan
and Shary Boyle as my latest favorites. I’m also very influenced
by the works of Disney and its wonderful animators as well as by
the work or several 17e to 19e century illustrators such as John
Bauer, Warwick Goble, Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin, Arthur Rackham,
Kay Nielsen and John Rea Neill. Finally, comic book artists such
as Régis Loisel, Boulet, Terry Moore, Jeff Smith, Craigh
Thompson, Yslaire, Franquin, Amano, Yukito Kishiro and Tite Kubo
have had an enormous influence on the way I illustrate movement
and the stylization of my characters.
I’d
like to conclude by saying that drawing is not just a hobby for
me. It is a source of eternal research, questioning and studying.
It is a daily activity in which I always wish to get better and
with which I am never completely satisfied. It is for me a passion
and I will never stop drawing.
